Apprenticeship: Data Analyst Level 4
- Job title: Gift and Data Analyst
- Department: Development and Alumni Relations
- Training provider: Firebrand
Why did you choose to do an apprenticeship?
The duties of my previous post had developed in a data focussed direction. I was spending more time generating and analysing data or designing systems. CUDAR was undergoing a major reorganisation and my line manager wanted to create an analyst position within the gift and data team.
Another member of CUDAR had begun the Data Analyst Level 4 apprenticeship. We were able to discuss this with them and agreed that this would be ideal training to build my skills for the analyst position.
What was your experience of the apprenticeship and your training Provider?
The apprenticeship was very productive. The skills I learnt could be immediately applied and the cohort formed a close-knit group during the residential weeks.
Firebrand were responsive and helpful. My training mentor Steve kept me motivated and on track with the assignments. My workplace mentor Jon helped me build skills and understand CUDAR’s larger data structures.
What went well?
The assignments were all on the job activities and real world business tasks, so they were simple to integrate into my day-to-day activity. The four week-long residential courses were intense, but being with other apprentices and being taught by subject matter experts was productive.
What have you learnt?
I learned the important fundamentals of analysis and the theoretical underpinnings of handling and processing data. I have learned to use new tools such as SQL, Power BI, R studio, as well as presentation and data storytelling techniques to enable me to communicate the insights that I find.
What next?
I have now joined CUDAR’s Business Intelligence team and am continuing to learn and develop my skills collaborating with our experienced Analysts.
"This apprenticeship was my first formal study in over 20 years, and I was somewhat apprehensive taking it on. However, it has been an excellent experience from start to finish, well taught and supported with a wealth of resources."
